Jazz for gallery openings and receptions

Gallery openings, receptions and corporate drinks share one thing: the music is not the main event. The paintings, the food or the people are. And yet the absence of music is noticed instantly — the room sounds empty and guests speak more quietly than they would like.

We play this segment regularly, and it is also the type of event where a small line-up works better than a large one. Here is what has proved itself.

Which line-up for a gallery

Galleries and exhibition halls tend to be acoustically hard — smooth walls, concrete, glass, no curtains. Sound reflects and becomes loud quickly without the band playing any harder.

Galleries also rarely have room for a large PA. Our Bose system is active and compact, covers up to 80 to 100 guests and needs one 230 V / 16 A socket.

When to play and when not to

This matters more at an opening than the repertoire does. A typical run of events looks like this:

• Arrival of guests (30–45 min): music plays. It fills a room that is still filling with people and covers awkward silence.
• Opening remarks and speeches: no music. The band finishes a minute early and stays silent until the speeches end.
• Free part, catering, viewing (60–90 min): music plays, quieter than at the start — the room is now full of conversation.
• Closing: the last piece is played while guests are leaving. Not after they have gone.

The most common mistake is the opposite: the band plays quietly through the speeches "so it isn't awkward". The result is that the speaker cannot be heard and the music feels intrusive.

Programme length and price

An opening is shorter than a corporate evening. The standard is two 45-minute sets rather than three. A longer programme makes little sense — an opening usually runs two to three hours including speeches.

Our price list is based on a standard three-set evening: duo CZK 10,000 to 14,000, trio CZK 16,000 to 20,000. The price of a shorter programme is agreed individually according to date and venue — write to us and we will send it within 24 hours.

Repertoire that fits

• Bossa nova — the single best genre for a reception. Even rhythm, no dynamic jumps.
• Mid-tempo jazz standards — Fly Me to the Moon, The Girl from Ipanema, Summertime.
• Instrumental passages — part of the programme without vocals, so the music does not compete with conversation.
• Chanson and lounge — a natural fit for a gallery setting.

What does not fit: fast swing numbers and anything with prominent drums. More in background jazz vs dance music.

Who plays

The trio is David Kleňha (vocals), Jaroslav Bárta (piano) and Jan Greifoner (double bass). We are all professional musicians and we play without backing tracks — everything heard at the event is created on the spot. We communicate in Czech, English and German, which often matters at international openings in Prague galleries and hotels.
