Live music for a ball: keeping the dance floor full all evening

You can tell a good ball by one thing — a full dance floor. Here is how to handle the music that gets people out of their seats and keeps them there.

Ball season has its own rules, and music is at its heart. Whether it is a gala ball, a graduation evening or a club event, success comes down to whether people are having fun on the floor. As a jazz singer and bandleader I will advise you on live music for a ball.

I am David Kleňha and with my band (the trio jazztrio.cz, or the quintet jazzquintet.cz for large halls) I play balls across the country. Let us get to it.

The dramaturgy of a ball evening

Which band for a ball?

For a ball you need a line-up that can play standard dances (waltz, tango, polka) as well as modern entertainment. A jazz quartet (jazzquartet.cz) or quintet gives the hall a sound full enough to keep the floor alive. The ability to host and keep the evening moving is just as important.

Tip from experience

Is the ball committee watching the budget?

We will send a tailored quote based on the hall size and the length of the programme. We are glad to advise which line-up pays off for your number of guests.

A repertoire that works for everyone

A ball audience is usually mixed in age. A mix works best: standard dances for the dancers, swing and evergreens for the middle generation, and dance hits for the younger crowd. A good ball band reads the room and switches styles depending on who is dancing.

Frequently asked questions

Can you play standard dances at a ball?

Yes — waltz, tango, polka and modern dance hits. We adapt the repertoire to the level of the dancers in the hall.

How big a band suits a ball?

It depends on the hall size. A quartet suits an ordinary ball; a quintet with a fuller sound suits large gala evenings.

Will you also host the evening?

Yes, we can guide the programme — opening dance, raffle, midnight surprise.
