Choosing your wedding songs is one of the nicest parts of the preparations. Music divides the day into chapters: the mood at the ceremony is one thing, the reception another, and the evening dance floor something else entirely. As a jazz singer I have put together an overview to help you build the repertoire for the whole wedding.
I am David Kleňha and with my trio (jazztrio.cz) I play live wedding music across the country. Let us go through the day song by song.
Ceremony: gentle and heartfelt
For the ceremony, choose slow, melodic wedding songs. Jazz standards and acoustic versions of well-known ballads work well. The key moments — the bride's entrance, the signing, the recessional — each deserve their own piece. We go into detail in our article on the wedding march and aisle songs.
Reception and congratulations: a pleasant backdrop
During the reception music plays the role of a backdrop — it should create atmosphere but let guests chat. This is where a jazz duo or trio shines, with unobtrusive swing, bossa nova and light standards. Guests of all ages will appreciate a mix of familiar tunes.

Build a bandEvening party: fill the dance floor
The evening brings the fun. Here you want lively wedding songs, swing, funk and dance classics for every generation. The first dance of the newlyweds is important — we have a separate article on that. For a big dance party we recommend a larger line-up, up to a quintet (jazzquintet.cz).
Tips on how to choose
- Pick 3–5 "must-have" songs and leave the rest to the band — it reads the mood better than a playlist.
- Think about all generations: a mix of modern hits and evergreens.
- Don't forget the first dance and a song for the parents.
- Tell the band what you do not want to hear.

Frequently asked questions
How many songs should I choose in advance?
Just 3–5 key ones (entrance, first dance, a favourite song). Leave the rest to the band, which responds to the guests' mood.
Will you play a song on request?
Yes, we prepare favourite songs in advance. Just send the list with enough notice.
How do I choose music for guests of different ages?
With a mix of evergreens and modern hits. Jazz and swing work across all ages and are easy to weave together with dance classics.
